Sociocultural values & Ecosystem services

Namaste, Welcome to SAM-VAD (Together In Conversation), as we begin today ‘let us remember, ‘What we give our Attention to matters.’

Our life’s experience would ultimately amount to whatever we had paid attention to. Attention: is important and most of the times we are indifferent to it. It is as fundamental as food; and we go blundering about, seeking ways to assuage the craving, instead of learning how to provide ourselves with what we need, sensibly and calmly. Once our attention is drawn to the mechanism of why and what we give attention to, it is as if a veil has been stripped off and we become freer in our action and choices.

This week I bring to your attention an article titled ‘Studies highlight local perception of ecosystem services’ by Arathi Menon from Mongabay-India.

Studies highlight Local perception of ecosystem services (Excerpts)

Ecosystem services are conventionally evaluated only by ecological and economic values. Now, two studies investigate what local communities perceive as sociocultural values of ecosystems.

Two studies, one from the Eastern Himalayas and the other from the Western Ghats, probed what local communities perceived as valuable ecosystem services. Freshwater emerged as one of the most valuable natural commodities in the Himalayan study while the Western Ghats study found communities largely valued provisioning services.
