Namaste, Welcome to SAM-VAD (Together In Conversation).\u00a0 In the last week of August 2026, I shared an excerpt titled \u2018Internet \u2013 Veracity and<\/em><\/strong> Virality<\/em><\/strong> and Why Every Thing We do Matters<\/em><\/strong>\u2019, which is from the book titled – \u2018<\/strong>LikeWar \u2013 The Weaponization of Social Media<\/em><\/strong>\u2019<\/strong> by Peter Singer and Emerson Brooking. This book traces the ways that social media has created a new environment for conflict. Although the truth, in the form of information, is more widely available than ever before, it can be buried in a sea of likes and lies. The excerpt highlights that, most people don\u2019t ponder deeply when they click \u201cshare.\u201d They are just passing on things that they find notable or that might sway others. Yet is shapes them all the same. As users respond positively to certain types of content, the algorithms that drive social media\u2019s news-feeds, ensure that they see more of it. As they see more, they share more, affecting all others in their extended network. Like ripples in a pond, each of these small decisions expands outward, altering the flow of information across the entire system. Now, SAM-VAD (Together In Conversation) to the ones paying heed, is where we try to draw your attention to things that matter and the importance of your attention, because, \u2018Our life\u2019s experience would ultimately amount to whatever we had paid attention to\u2019.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attention: is as fundamental as food; and we go blundering about, seeking ways to assuage the craving, instead of learning how to provide ourselves with what we need, sensibly and calmly. Once our attention is drawn to the mechanism of why and what we give attention to, it is as if a veil has been stripped off and we become freer in our action and choices. And that is our endavour.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week I bring to your attention an excerpt titled \u2013 \u2018Tribal Instincts – Secret to our Success depending on how we manage them<\/em><\/strong>\u2019, which is from the book titled – \u2018<\/strong>Tribal: How the Cultural Instincts that Divide Us Can Help Bring Us Together<\/em><\/strong>\u2019<\/strong> by Dr.Michael Morris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Dr. Morris, when cultural codes operate unchecked and ripple out of control they can draw us into dysfunctional conflicts, but understanding tribal instincts enables you to break these cycles and harness them for collective action and even for social change. They can be our \u201cworst instincts,\u201d but they can also be our best instincts, our greatest hope for rising to the challenges of cooperation ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tribal Instincts – Secret to our Success depending on how we manage them<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our tribal instincts provide us with the socio-biological means for group coordination, sharing knowledge quickly and developing common plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Morris divides our tribal triggers into three categories: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    <\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Peer instincts<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We automatically absorb what our peers are doing and mimic it, permitting us to work on common plans efficiently. We especially do so when we seek certainty and security. Peer conformity is heightened through social media, causing attitudes to metastasize over global issues, often without reflection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Hero worship<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This instinct involves aspirational hero worship, or the desire to emulate the best, and thereby gain esteem. Societies reward high contributors and this motivates us to emulate such heroes and act toward the norms they represent. Hero worship is driven by tribal symbols associated with cultural ideals (flags, anthems, texts, or a sacred animal). Our need for esteem means that we copy the social codes of those around us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Respect for ancestors and traditions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This instinct involves our connection to ancestors and traditions. We look back to history to seek rich stores of knowledge and continuity in our culture. We respect the traditions handed down to us because we assume we are thereby the wiser. Interestingly, some of these traditions are pure invention, which does not diminish their power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Our tribal instincts are at the root of some of our most deeply wired cultural and psychological behaviours. Although, they can at times lead us\u2014and our groups\u2014into trouble, they can also be harnessed towards positive and cooperative outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    These instincts are the secret of our success as a species, and so we must understand them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
