How to Win despite Failing

Namaste, Welcome to SAM-VAD (Together In Conversation), as we begin today let us remember this about ‘Attention’.

Our life experience would ultimately amount to whatever we had paid attention to. Attention: is important and most of the times we are so indifferent to it. It is as fundamental as food; and we go blundering about, seeking ways to assuage the craving, instead of learning how to provide ourselves with what we need, sensibly and calmly. We feed the hunger blindly. Once the mechanism is brought to our attention and we begin to study it, it is as if a veil has been stripped off ordinary life, and we become freer in our action and choices.

This week I bring to your attention excerpts from an article titled ‘How to Win despite Failing’ by Denise Winn. She is a journalist, editor and author — specialising in psychology and medicine — as well as a Human Givens therapist.

How to Win despite Failing (Excerpts)

When people disengage from failure, they often develop an inflated self-view.

We are told and tend to tell others that we must make mistakes to learn.

Research shows that emotionally we resist failing and don’t learn the lessons it offers.

We can overcome the resistance by observing others fail and advising others in areas where one has also struggled.

Many people will go to lengths to protect themselves from apparent failure.

Research suggests emotionally, failure bruises the ego. When people feel threatened, they tune out and miss the information failure offers.

In a recent study published in 2022 it was found that some participants did not learn from failure because when they failed, they stopped paying attention. Not paying attention compromises recall, which makes learning impossible,

So that might perhaps be why some bosses, will continue with unhelpful strategies, even in the face of evidence of unhelpfulness, or that those over-confident about exams will continue to under perform.
