Namaste, Welcome to SAM-VAD (Together In Conversation) to the ones paying heed, this is where we try to draw your attention to things that matter and the importance of our attention, why is that? Now ‘let us remember this again, ‘What we give our Attention to matters,’ as Our life’s experience would ultimately amount to whatever we had paid attention to.
Attention: is as fundamental as food; and we go blundering about, seeking ways to assuage the craving, instead of learning how to provide ourselves with what we need, sensibly and calmly. Once our attention is drawn to the mechanism of why and what we give attention to, it is as if a veil has been stripped off and we become freer in our action and choices. And that is our endavour.
This week I bring to your attention an excerpt titled – ‘A Mixture of Opposites’ from an article titled ‘We are All a Mixture of Opposites’ by Denise Winn.
This article examines our mash-up of emotions and behaviours and gives us something to work with.
A Mixture of Opposites
Psychologists are increasingly coming to realise that personality, despite long having been deemed fixed and enduring, is actually malleable, susceptible to circumstances, and commonly fluctuates from day to day or even hour to hour.1 Even minor stress changes us, they found, having looked at the impact on behaviour of “hassles” such as looming work deadlines, spats within the family, too many chores, and suchlike.
Contradictory though the signature behaviours appear to be, they are just part and parcel of the same person.
We are all a mash-up of mixed emotions and behaviours and values. What matters, I think, is to become aware of this and recognise where and when different selves are to be celebrated, and where some may be holding us back and need to be nudged aside.
